Jacksonville Times-Union: Matthew becomes category 4Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry, ordering the evacuation of more than 450,000 people with expected sustained winds of up to 110 mph and a storm surge of six to nine feet, called approaching Hurricane Matthew a “100-year storm.”
“We have not seen the likes of this in our lifetime in Jacksonville,” Curry said at his 11:30 a.m. update.
With the hurricane strengthened again to a Category 4 storm, residents should prepare for a “life-threatening” storm surge as high as nine feet at the beaches, as well as parts of the St. Johns River as far inland as downtown, said Angie Enyedi, an official with the National Weather Service.
“This will be the storm that we, our generation, talks about, as well as our children,” Enyedi said.
xHurricane #Matthew is a major storm. I urge everyone to follow emergency instructions and evacuate if you're told to. Stay safe Florida. -H https://t.co/zYgTH1oMbc
